Care To Share History

Care To Share was founded in 1985 to address a growing community need.   Several local churches were inundated with emergency requests and did not have the personnel or the funds to handle requests on a daily basis.   It was through this community concern that Care To Share originated.

Today’s Care To Share office is open Monday through Friday from 9:00am-12:00pm and 12:30pm-2:00pm (with the exception of holidays).   The office is staffed with three employees and several trained volunteers.   Spanish intake is available.

Emergency Food
Our primary service at Care To Share is to screen telephone requests for emergency food.   We then refer the caller to a nearby church for pick-up or delivery.   Most churches supply food to last 3-7days.   Churches use their volunteers to assist in deliveries and distribution of the food at their locations.   Because volunteer time is valuable, we request that if two or more families reside within the same household that food is requested for the entire household on the same day.   Food may be requested by calling Care To Share at (503) 591-9025 Monday through Friday (unless otherwise indicated on our recording) between the hours of 9:00am-12:00pm and 12:30pm-2:00pm.   Our phone lines are often very busy.   We want to assist you so please keep trying to call or leave a message for food by pressing 1 for food assistance.

After hours food is available for pickup at:

Other Care To Share Assistance

Financial Aid

Clients facing financial crisis may apply to a special fund Care To Share maintains.   Utility - When funds are available clients may request help on a limited basis if they are facing a shut-off.   Rent - One day a month (the 3rd Thursday of each month) qualified clients may call to request assistance with rent for the following month.   We do not provide: cash, bus tickets, transportation or costs, motel room rent, or medical costs.

Water Grants

Care To Share provides water assistance to low income families facing shut-offs.   These funds come to us from three different sources.   We are thankful to Tualatin Valley Water District, Clean Water Services, and City of Beaverton Water.   Without these contributions we could not provide this much needed assistance.
Back to School

Each August, Care To Share provides backpacks filled with new school supplies for at-risk children attending Beaverton School District schools.  These supplies are distributed though the school administration.

Oregon Heat

Care To Share has been given a contract with Oregon Heat to provide assistance for PGE clients to receive assistance with gas, electricity, wood, pellets and oil.   Clients must call to set an appointment and to verify eligibility.
Care To Share Mission Statement

Care To Share coordinates assistance to families and individuals seeking emergency food and other basic needs.   Our aim is to help people through crisis situations and to connect them with other community services if continuing support is needed.

In 2006, 38,111 East Washington County residents received emergency food, financial aid, and/or other basic needs through Care To Share.

To respond to the growing need for its services the organization has established an endowment fund named "Care To Share Forever".

"We want to ensure that our mission—helping people through crisis situations— goes on forever," said Care To Share volunteer, Betty Stern.  Income from the endowment fund will support annually the services and operation of Care To Share.

Care To Share Forever is administered by a 4 member committee.  Contributions may be sent to Care To Share Forever, P.O. Box 397, Beaverton OR 97075.  For additional information call the Care To Share Office at:(503) 591-9079.
